Two dauntless men stood in front of the CNC machine, armed with digital marvels and the daunting task of transforming a 3D mesh model, resembling a perplexing nine-million-polygon puzzle, into a coherent, solid structure. The saga began with Henrik Loikkanen and Jakob Pettersson, steering a team of Sandvik machining experts through a labyrinth of digital conversion and programming.




Digitally Perfected Precision:

The intricacies were as numerous as the polygons that formed the initial model. The team, using MasterCam® software, planned a one-piece marvel. However, reality knocked, and the sheer size made it implausible. Thus, the model morphed into 17 components, each demanding meticulous design and programming. Simulations became the backbone, slashing testing times to a sixth of the traditional labor. The stainless steel, a robust 500-kilo frame, stood tall at 150 cm, deviating from the digital design by a mere 30 microns, a feat akin to the precision demanded in Swiss watchmaking. With tool optimization software and digital twins, waste was minimized, and energy consumption curbed, leading to a sustainable creation.
